a.  HLC Adventure Club Inaugural Outing 

Commissioners, Committee members, family, and friends are invited to join us on Saturday, February 19 at 10:00 a.m. as we explore the largest known exposed boulders in Mecklenburg County at Big Rock Rock Shelter, one of the few intact locations in Mecklenburg County associated with Native American history. Designated as a local historic landmark in 2008, the rocks are located within the Big Rock Nature Preserve at 6500 Elmstone Drive, Charlotte. Parking is available streetside where the preserve fronts Elmstone Drive.

On May 5, 1949, Mayor Herbert H. Baxter joined civic leaders, including Charlotte Chamber of Commerce president J. Norman Pease, and Sears officials at opening day, ribbon-cutting ceremonies for a large Sears Roebuck and Co. retail store and parking lot on North Tryon St. The property has been found eligible for the National Register. Staff wants to make the Committee aware of the significance and status of this property.
