As stated on the National Trust’s website:

“Each year, America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places sheds light on important examples of our nation’s heritage that are at risk of destruction or irreparable damage. Over 300 places have been listed in its 32-year history, and in that time, fewer than 5 percent of listed sites have been lost.

The Matthews Heritage Museum’s current exhibit, “Tank Town: A Good Place to Live,” is the culmination of about 1.5 years of research by Museum Director, Barbara Taylor, on Crestdale. In conjunction with this exhibit there are a couple of presentations coming up. The Museum would love to have you attend one!

The Matthews Heritage Museum will host a program, “Voices of Tank Town,” on Thursday, May 30 at 6 p.m. at the Matthews Public Library at 230 Matthews Station Street. A panel of four residents including Harvey Boyd, Kenneth Alexander, Addie McNeal Dixon and Walter Stewart will share their remembrances of their growing up in Tank Town. This program is being held in conjunction with the exhibit currently on display at the Matthews Heritage Museum, “Tank Town: A Good Place to Live.” The program is FREE and open to the public; however, seating is limited. Please reserve a seat by calling 704-708-4996.

The Matthews Heritage Museum will host a PowerPoint presentation on Tank Town on Saturday, June 22 at 2 p.m. at the Matthews Public Library at 230 Matthews Station Street. The talk is on Tank Town, now known as Crestdale, an African American neighborhood in Matthews, settled by former slaves and freedmen after the Civil War. The program explores the people, lifestyles, jobs, schools and churches of this neighborhood. The program is FREE and open to the public.

If you cannot make it to one of the presentations, please come by the Museum – the exhibit runs until August.
