Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission

News

The Historic Landmarks Commission saved the last General Motors New Look Bus when it was retired in January 1992. The New Look Bus formed the backbone of the Charlotte transit fleet in the 1960s and 1970s.

The Commission is considering having the General Motors New Look Bus join Streetcar 85 at the Savona Mill site in West Charlotte. It would help interpret Charlotte’s transportation history. There is currently a lot of interest in mid-century modern design, and the New Look Bus is a good example of this type of design.

The Torrence Lytle School, located at 302 Holbrooks Road, Huntersville, N.C., is under contract for sale. Listed in the National Register, the buildings will be turned into apartments. Due diligence has to occur, but HLC Staff is very optimistic that these buildings, that were the high school for African Americans in North Mecklenburg from the 1930s to the 1960s, will be preserved.
