Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission

Adventure Club

The Historic Landmarks Commission’s Adventure Club, in partnership with Historic Elmwood Pinewood, is taking our popular headstone cleaning event to Elmwood Pinewood Cemetery. This is the final resting place of many of Charlotte’s most notable citizens, including textile pioneer D.A. Tompkins, developer Edward Dilworth Latta, former Charlotte mayor S. S. McNinch, and W.W. Smith, Charlotte’s first major Black architect.

We’ll be meeting at the picnic tables outside of That’s Novel Books.

Mecklenburg County’s Historic Landmarks Department already offers its Adventure Club so that you can visit our county’s historic properties. Now we’re launching a new initiative so that you can learn more about those properties: a brand-new book club specifically associated with the history of Mecklenburg County and North Carolina, as well as historic preservation efforts in general. We call it “Historic Bookmarks” (yes, very “punny”!).

Our Historic Bookmarks book club is holding its first-ever book club meeting at Camp North End and we want you to join us! We’ll be discussing Charlotte’s role during WWII with Charlotte’s own Meredith Ritchie, author of Poster Girls, a historical fiction novel set in Charlotte during WWII and based on true but forgotten events.

Event Specifics
Registration: Please register online by July 9
Weather: If it rains, we’ll move across the street to the Free Range Bar patio at 301 Camp Road, Charlotte.
Parking: Camp North End has ample parking. We recommend using the Mount Entrance Parking Lot at 1774 Statesville Avenue, Charlotte.

The Historic Landmarks Commission’s Adventure Club invites you to start your Halloween weekend with a fun, educational, and meaningful restoration project on Oct. 29. We need volunteers, and what could be better than spending an Autumn morning in the beautiful hallowed grounds of the Historic Steele Creek Cemetery? The cemetery contains headstones dating from 1763 and is the site of some of the most important funerary art in NC!

But recently air pollution has been hastening the stones’ deterioration. Luckily, cleaning the headstones with a mild biodegradable, pH neutral solution can protect them effectively for years. And that’s what we will be doing! Did we mention that we need volunteers? 🤔 No experience is necessary!
