William E. and Penney E. Little House
2301 Red Fox Trail Charlotte, Mecklenburg 1960 William
Little owned Little Construction which evolved into Little and Company, a
real estate development and financing firm. The house has a flat roof,
cream brick exterior, and irregular footprint. The upper level is
cantilevered with exposed beam supports. The entry, sheltered by a flat
canopy with steel supports, has single door with small, irregularly placed
lights along with sidelights and transom. Stained glass lamps light the
house and drive entrance. The bank of windows is accented by tile mosaic
panels in blue, green, yellow, orange, and red. Inside, the built-in furniture in the children’s rooms was inspired by his work on dormitories at UNC-Chapel Hill. The home was specifically designed to accommodate a young family through the use of non-combustible materials and easy-to-mop floors. It was designed by the Littles’ friend Harold Cooler of McDowell & Cooler Architects. The house was sold to Cy N. and Beverly Bahakel in 1964. Bahakel was President Cy N. Bahakel Broadcasting Station at 2500 East Independence Blvd. The pool at the rear of the house was added during the Bahakel’s tenure. The Little’s re-purchased the house in 1968 and owned it until 1982. The house was surveyed because it is an unusual example of Modernist residential architecture and retains a good level of integrity.
