The highlighted area of this map (approximately five acres of land that surrounds the 1.5 acres owned by Joe K. Washam) shows the landscape that is the most critical for the preservation of the farm's character.

The boundary of the highlighted area follows the natural contours and other features of the land such as hedges and tree lines, and could buffer the farm from possible future development.  I believe that the inclusion of the highlighted area plus the 1.5 acres owned by Joe K. Washam would adequately protect the historic character of the property.  Dan L. Morrill

The open field west of the house is an important defining component of the farm and is significant in the way it "frames" the farmhouse.
This is the southern view of the open field to the west of the farmhouse. Design review over this field is essential if the rural character of the farmstead is to be protected.
The landscape to the immediate east of the farmhouse is a rolling pasture and contrasts dramatically with the open field to the west.  It too is an important contributing element to the historic rural character of the property.
Outbuildings are essential to the rural historic character of the property.  While not imposing architecturally, the chicken house and the cotton house to east of the property do document the property as a farmstead.
