The architect of the Charlotte Union Bus Terminal was James A. Malcolm, a Charlotte architect active in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s.  The Art Moderne style terminal, completed in 1941, served the public until it closed in 1987.  A student of Modernism, Malcolm designed several public buildings in Charlotte, including Barringer School and Double Oaks School.

Greyhound Lines opened its own station on West Trade St. in November 1973.  In 1980, Trailways "upfitted" its station.  The station closed in September 1987. In January 1956, travel on interstate buses was desegregated.  A bus porter removed the old signs and pointed toward the new sign.

Art Moderne was a style that emphasized sleekness, speed, and modernity. The building took its design inspiration for the type of buses that served the terminal.
