First United
Methodist Church. UTM:
17 514258E 3898018N The Gothic Revival
style First United Methodist Church, designed by Memphis architect Edwin
Brewer Phillips, held its first service in this building in
1928. Legendary tobacco tycoon James Buchanan Duke played a major
role in bringing about the construction of this imposing house of
worship. Duke, whose money created Duke University, contributed
$100,000 to the building fund. As he told a prominent local
Methodist, "You know, I'm going to spend a great deal of time in
Charlotte. I think I ought to do something for Charlotte
Methodism." Trinity Methodist Church and Tryon Street Methodist
Church united to form First United Methodist Church, so the new, larger
sanctuary could be erected. It is not surprising that the design
of the structure resembles that found on the West Campus of Duke
University. |
