Item #1 – Chairman’s Report: Dr. Mattson
Dr. Mattson welcomed everyone to the meeting.
Item #2 – Director’s Report: Dr. Morrill
Dr. Morrill reported that he and Mr. Gray met on March
11th with the Economic Development Committee of City Council to discuss the
processing of properties for prospective historic landmark designation by
the City. The Committee agreed that three properties presently in the
queue should move forward: WPA Douglas Airport Hangar, Tuckaseegee
Ford Trail, and the Thrift P&N Depot. Two other properties in process
-- S. B. Alexander House and the Queens Terrace Apartments -- will have to
await answering concerns that Councilperson, Ms. Patsy Kinsey, will present
to City Staff.
Item #3 – Consideration of Survey and Research
Reports.
a. Fall's Store (Raeford's Grill), 300 Mock Circle,
Davidson, N.C.
Mr. Gray and Mr. Jeffers explained the factors that
support the special significance of Raeford's Grill and responded to
questions from Committee members.
MR. ROGERS PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY DR. WEIS TO
RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION THAT THE FALL'S STORE
(RAEFORD'S GRILL), 300 MOCK CIRCLE, DAVIDSON, N.C., BE PROCESSED FOR
HISTORIC LANDMARK DESIGNATION. THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY
APPROVED THE MOTION.
b. Tuckaseegee Ford Trail, 5000 Whitewater
Center Parkway, Charlotte, N.C., located on the Catawba River southwest of
Long Creek and northwest of end Charlie Hipps Road.
DR. WEIS PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY MR. HOBBS TO
RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION THAT THE TUCKASEEGEE FORD
TRAIL, 5000 WHITEWATER CENTER PARKWAY, CHARLOTTE, N.C. BE PROCESSED FOR
HISTORIC LANDMARK DESIGNATION. THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY
APPROVED THE MOTION.
Item #4 – Study List Applications
Dr. Morrill explained that the Town of Pineville has
requested that the Park Ave. section of the Pineville Mill Village be placed
on the Study List for prospective historic landmark designation. Dr.
Morrill stated that the Town of Pineville has agreed to pay one-half of the
cost of the preparation of the Survey and Research Report. If
approved, the Commission would pay the remaining half -- $2000 each.
Mr. Travis Morgan, planner for the Town of Pineville,
confirmed that the Town favors the placement of the Park Ave. section of the
Pineville Mill Village on the Study List of prospective historic landmarks.
Mr. William Smith, owner of two houses on Park Ave. in
Pineville, asked questions about the impact of historic landmark
designation, and Commissioners and Staff responded.
DR. WEIS PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY MR. HOBBS TO
RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION THAT THE PARK AVE. SECTION OF
THE PINEVILLE MILL VILLAGE BE PLACED ON THE STUDY LIST OF PROSPECTIVE
HISTORIC LANDMARKS AND THAT THE COMMISSION PAY UP TO $2000 OF THE COST OF
THE PREPARATION OF THE REPORT, WITH THE TOWN OF PINEVILLE PAYING THE
REMAINDER OF THE COST. THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MOTION.
Item #5 – Old Business. There was no old business.
Item #6 – New Business. Mr. Rogers stated that his father and City
Council member Mr. David Howard would be willing to assist the Commission
with efforts to preserve the Dr. George E. Davis House.
