2. Consideration of Historic
Landmark Designation for the following properties.
a. Charlotte U. S. Post Office
(Former). Click
here for Survey and Research Report.
Staff Notes: I
have not heard anything from the General Services Administration.
Emily Ramsey believes that the entire building (interior and exterior) and
the entire grounds warrant historic landmark designation.
b. Neely Slave Cemetery. Click
here for Survey and Research Report.
Staff Notes: I
did receive a telephone call from an attorney representing the
owner. He stated that the owners would like to preserve the
graveyard. They are concerned, however, about how much land is
included. I have asked Emily Ramsey to develop a recommendation on
this matter. Click on the hyperlink below to read it.

c. John Milton Alexander
House. Click
here for Survey and Research Report.
Staff Notes: I
have not heard from the owner. Emily Ramsey believes that the entire
house (interior and exterior) and the entire parcel warrants historic
landmark designation.
b. Bland-McAden House. Click
here for Survey and Research Report.
Staff Notes: I have not heard from
Myers Park Baptist Church, the owner of the property. The Historic
Landmarks Commission has entered into an agreement with the church whereby
the house will be moved. Christina Wright believes that the entire
house (interior and exterior) warrants historic landmark designation.
3. The Projects Committee has
two items to bring forth for action.

a. MR. BRADSHER PRESENTED A MOTION
SECONDED BY MS. BAESZLER TO RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION
THAT THE COST PROPOSAL ($99,057) FOR BARN DEMOLITION/SALVAGE PROPOSED BY
GENERAL CONTRACTORS, LEE MORGAN, INC., BE ACCEPTED AS PRESENTED. THE
COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MOTION. Staff
Notes: This
is part of the on-going program for restoring the barn at the W. T.
Alexander Plantation. The demolition must occur in the most
sensitive manner possible, so that the Federal and State Investment Tax
Credits will be available to the eventual buyer. 2. MR. BRADSHER PRESENTED A MOTION
SECONDED BY MR. MILLER TO RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION
THAT THE PROPOSAL BE ACCEPTED FROM MANN CONTRACTORS, INC. TO DEMOLISH AND
STORE THE PORCH ($11,800) ON THE BLAND-MCADEN HOUSE, 2011 SELWYN AVENUE,
CHARLOTTE, N.C. THE COMMITTEE APPROVED THE MOTION WITH OPPOSING VOTES FROM
MS. FOUST AND MR. SILVER. (Proposal is attached to these minutes.)

Notes: Myers Park Baptist Church has asked the Historic Landmarks
Commission to remove the front porch from the Bland-McAden House so that
the Withers-Efird House can be moved without having to damage a street
tree. The porch will have to be removed from the house
regardless. The Historic Landmarks Commission has until July 31st to
move the house elsewhere on the block, if necessary, and until September
30th to move it off the Church property. Greg Walden, a member of
the Projects Committee, has spent considerable time developing cost
estimates for moving the house to a lot off Pinewood Circle. It will
be extremely expensive. The cost estimate is $352,000.
If the Commission pays $350,000 for the lot (the asking price), the
Commission will have approximately $700,000 in the house without having
made any improvements. Clearly, the Commission would lose money on
that deal. Remember, however, that the Commission might be able to
find another lot. Staff continues to look
for lots. 4. The Commission will consider
a contract with a realtor to sell the Croft Schoolhouse. The contract
with Roper Land Company has expired.
